I was walking down King Street in St. Augustine, FL early one morning when I came across a small shop selling these planters. I love the warmth of the light on the tile floor, the coarse textures and the deep shadows in this piece.

Jerome, AZ is an old mining town, artist commune and biker resort. Jerome went through hard times, and a number structures fell off the side of the mountain! A block or so of the town has been fenced off to preserve it. This is where I found this roofless building entrance. I converted it to black & white, and then added my own colors.

Big Sable Point is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan just north of Munising. It's part of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I love the contrast of the sand to the deep blue of the cold waters of Lake Superior.

St. Augustine, FL – one of my favorite places for architectural photography! This garden entrance is embellished with the top of a wood window frame. It was salvaged from the demolition of an old municipal building in the ‘60’s, prior to the area being designated as a historic district. A few years ago, a hurricane blew the woodwork down and into the street. In the cleanup that
followed, a city worker – not knowing what the pile of wood was – threw it out. I’ve heard that new owners of the property have reconstructed it, but I haven’t been back th St. Augustine and can’t verify it.

The last thing I thought I was going to shoot in Yosemite Valley the 3rd week of April was a “fall” photo! The snow had just melted – the park road into the valley had just been opened the week before – and I came upon this maple leaf that had been preserved over the winter by the snow,  flattened on a huge boulder. I love the texture of the leaf, as well as the lichen and moss on the boulder.

Ruined Dock & Dune

I love shooting against the light! I waited hours for the sun to get low enough to be in the photograph, and for the clouds to diffuse the light. This allowed an exposure which did not put the ruined piling in silhouette. I also used a reflector to bounce a little soft light onto the piling.

Rope & Piling

I love the textures of the rope and wood, as well as the horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines all working together. Visually, it’s everything I like!

This was taken at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park in Michigan. The day before was hot and steamy. Overnight, a line of severe thunderstorms moved through, dropped the temperature about 20 degrees and blew out all the humidity. (I was camping, and it made for an interesting half hour or so in the tent!) The morning was crisp and clear with a cobalt sky. Just over the crest of this dune is a 220’ drop to Lake Michigan. A shot like this is why I still live in Michigan!

Great Blue Heron

34” x 26”

Heavy, solid wood frame, linen liner & pewter fillet I shot his beautiful specimen in Shark Valley in the Florida Everglades. I followed him around for over two hours until he finally landed where I told him to! At one point while I was intently stalking him, I wasn’t paying enough attention to what was around me an tripped on a log. Except, it wasn’t a log – it was the tail of a ‘gator! His head and front feet were in the water with his rear feet and tail on the bank of the river. Thankfully, all he did was look at me. Since then, I’ve made it a point to be very aware of my surroundings.

Bold Shadows, Interesting Textures - And A Few Laughs!

Odd Bolt

I was on a photo assignment at a bolt sorting facility for an automotive trade publication when I took this shot. The bolts were spitting out of this big machine at a blinding pace. I used high speed sych to take this shot at around 1/10,000 second to freeze the bolts as the pattern continuously changed. Of the dozen or so shots I took – for some reason – I liked this shot the best. I know… weird. Originally, I simply titled this photo “Bolts” – but then I changed the color of one of them, so I changed the title.

Camden, ME is my very favorite harbor town on the Maine coast. I took this photograph of a rowboat a few years ago on Halloween. The lobster fisherman uses this boat to row out to his lobster boat that’s moored to a floating dock out in the harbor. I love the color of the boat and what really caught my eye was the shiny, brass rivet. Do you see it?

Camden, ME is my very favorite harbor town on the Maine coast. I took this photograph a few years ago on Halloween. Although most of the trees inland had already lost their leaves, trees along the coast were still sporting their fall colors. The majority of pleasure boats had already been put into storage for winter, leaving mainly lobster boats to stand watch in the harbor.

I took this photograph during a major thaw in early February. Despite this being one of my favorite Michigan lighthouses I see it more as a photograph of driftwood -that happens to have a lighthouse in it!

Laughing Whitefish Falls

Laughing Whitefish falls is located SW of Munising in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I shot this photograph in late spring when there was still a good amount of water going over the falls. By late summer it is often pretty much dried up. A word of caution if you go there: Bring plenty of insect repellant. I think I donated a pint of blood to the mosquitos that day!

Rainbow Row

Rainbow Row is probably my favorite area to photograph in Charleston, SC’s historic district. The pastels, further warmed by the early morning sun, really “pop.” Rainbow Row is located on East Bay Street between Tradd Street and Elliot Street.

Atlanta, MI (pop. 750) is a small town in northern Michigan – and the self-proclaimed elk herd capitol of Michigan. This is the municipal dock in downtown Atlanta. The small cottage across the lake is typical of the many cottages up in Michigan. I processed the image in black & white and added my own colors to the dock and cottage.

Primrose

 Limited Edition
32” x 24”
Ultrachrome Archival Ink on

Lyve Archival Canvas

These are Evening Primrose I found growing in the woods near Bond Falls in the far western portion of Michigan’s upper peninsula. Evening Primrose bloom at night and close during the day. The morning I captured these was grey and misty, so they hadn’t closed yet.  I wanted to create an image where you can see the blooms as they look under the moonlight and as the first rays of the sun hit them. I processed the image in black and white, blurred the flowers in the back a touch, and colored the central bloom. I wanted to make it look more like a painting, so I selectively blurred and smeared and added some edging to achieve this. Available in original color yellow as well as in the red version that I created for an interior designer.

Rough Surf

I took this photograph on an early Cape Cod morning near Chatham, MA. It was beautiful but very cold and windy. If that wasn't enough to keep me out of the water, there were a number of great white shark sightings off this beach the evening before. Enough said on that...

Lady of the Lake

I found this pretty lady near the shore of Mullett lake in Aloha State Park, MI. She was dozing while standing on a rock just below the surface. When I got within a few feet of her to take this photograph, she pulled her bill out from beneath her wing and posed for me.

Sunflowers

I found a large field of sunflowers just west of Alpena, MI.  I processed the raw image in black and white, and then colored the three center flowers. I used a combination of blurring, smearing and edging techniques to make the photograph take on the feel of a watercolor painting.

Lifeguard Boat

I found this overturned lifeguard boat in Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee, MI.  It was in mid-February and there had just been a thaw. The wind coming off Lake Michigan had partially buried the boat on the desolate beach. The only footprints in the sand are mine.

This is a detail of a lovely bronze Madonna (circa 1885) in Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, MI. She caught my eye while driving through the cemetery late one evening after documenting the Rosa Parks funeral.
The next morning, I returned to see her again and noticed that she was deteriorating badly. I started shooting her from all angles hoping to somehow preserve her. After reviewing the hundred or so photographs I took, I selected these three to represent the sculpture. I processed the images in black & white, added a warming wash to her face, hands and foot – then colored the rose. I like to think that the original artist would approve of what I have done.

What I like best about St. Augustine, FL is the architecture and how old the place is. Usually, to find a scene like this you would have to travel to Spain or somewhere in the Caribbean. And who would have thought black mold could look so…
attractive?
